Lady Bulldogs Winning Streak Stopped By Pirates

An eight game winning streak held by the Virgin Valley High School Girls Soccer team ended last Monday night, October 18 with a 2-1 loss to the arch-rival Moapa Valley High School team.
The Lady Dawgs had shutout eight straight teams including the Pirates during the streak. The win by the Pirates avenged a 1-0 home loss to the Bulldogs two weeks ago. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 8-2-1 for the season with the Pirates at 8-2.
Monday’s matchup found the teams testing each other as they battled back and forth over the midfield stripe. The Bulldogs first opportunity to reach goal was at the three minute mark of the first half on a great save by Pirate goalkeeper Savanna Burt.
The Pirates managed a corner kick five minutes in that went high. The Dawgs defense kept the Pirates at bay for most of the first half.
The Bulldogs Emma Hughes long goal try was blocked by the Pirates keeper. Minutes later Bulldog Emily Jimenez’s headed off a great cross feed flew wide keeping the match even at 0-0.
Moapa Valley struck goal at the 27 minute mark on a goal within the box by Abbie Hammons. The goal stood up for the rest of the half as the Pirates led 1-0.
The second half battle between two evenly matched teams showed up in the final stats. Bulldog senior Dani Correa struck goal on a Natali Isidro assist. But that goal was matched by Pirate Hannah Fullmer. Haylie Western added an assist for the Pirates.
The final score found the Pirates on top 2-1.
“Our girls played a decent game,” said Bulldog coach Scott Trimming. “The girls played hard though, but a few mistakes cost us the game. We’re a tough team and will bounce back at tournament time.”
The Bulldogs will host Chaparral High School on Thursday, Oct. 28 in the final Desert League game prior to playoffs.
